CHAPTER 39

SAMUEL

I only half-listened as the crazy woman rambled away, the rest of the room engrossed in what she was saying. All I could concentrate on was the strand of pure white hair I kept twining around my finger and the contrast between it and the dark tones of my skin.

This shifter was captivating. When I’d heard of Lyra’s mate, I was happy for her, but there had been part of me that wondered why she’d debase herself with a shifter when she could have had an angel at her side.

It was the type of thinking that had ruined our society and many others like it. It was the thing we were fighting against. And yet, when push came to shove, that small voice in the back of my head that they’d forced into me since birth still whispered its poison to me in the dark.

Now here I was staring down at this woman in front of me, and there was nothing in the world that could convince me she didn’t belong with me.

The collection of men around her were clearly her other mates. If I had to guess from the current conversation; two fae, a vampire and a mage. Would she even have time for me?

As the witch across the room spoke of her friend’s fate, I felt her distress just as keenly as if it had been my own. Almost as much as the shudder of desire that filled her as I trailed my fingers down her spine to prove to her she wasn’t alone.

I had a mission back in Angelus. It was a calling that had to be fulfilled if there was any chance of saving my people from the oppression they currently lived in. Taking this woman as my mate would only detract from that. She had her own demons to chase by the sound of it, and even though the need to spill blood for the wrongs that were done to her raged through my body, I couldn’t abandon those who’d come to rely on me.

But what did that mean? Had I found her only to let her go? Was I going to walk away now and pray she’d let me return when my mission was complete? Would it ever be complete? I could spend a lifetime fighting, and we’d never be free. In all truth, we accomplished very little in the resistance. Some days I wondered if the Archangel Council even realised we existed.

“No time like the present to get the ball rolling,” I heard Aria say as she clapped her hands together to get my attention. From the smirk on her face, she knew just how distracted I’d been. “What did you need from me?”

“I need you to return the Michael sword to me,” I told her sadly.

It was what I’d come here for, and as soon as she gave it to me, any excuse I had to stay with my mate would be gone.

“Well, that I can easily do,” Aria said, jumping up from where she was sitting and striding out the door.
